Alpinestars became a big brand in MX-motorcross and bundled all its knowledge and expertise in an all-round adventure boot: the waterproof Toucan. For those who like a bit more adventure, and for those who dare to ride an off-road track. Or for those who want to turn every bike ride into an adventure.
The specific details are numerous and well-founded. And not easy to explain in a few sentences. The Toucan has been given lateral ankle protection with a biomechanical link between the shaft and the foot. Structure and control, in other words. Reinforced polymers and rubber cover the boot - which is also made of full grain leather - and protect it against heat and impact. The inside of the Toucan is of course fitted with a toe and heel protector, but boots of this type invariably rely on their outside for the first layer of protection. That's no different here.
Nothing you see is ‘just that’. Not the ankle protectors on the outside. Not the - correctly fitted - heel protector on the outside. Not the pronounced shin guard with the Alpinestars logo. Everything was carefully and meticulously constructed and designed, looking for the perfect balance between maximum protection, sturdiness and plenty of freedom of movement and comfort. Not an easy task, but if one manufacturer has the know-how to do it ...
You open and close the Toucan by means of velcro (at the top) and adjustable buckles. There are 'buckles' and there are 'buckles'. The strong polymer and aluminium ones allow you to tighten the boots perfectly and give you that mix of support and freedom. It also makes entry quick and easy.
Ample accordion surfaces at the front and back alternate with the more rigid TPU exoskeleton. Underneath is a GORE-TEX membrane that is 100% waterproof and breathable. With extra thanks to the mesh lining that provides the necessary ventilation.
Moreover, this remains in essence - apart from what you see on the outside - first and foremost a well-finished and high-quality top boot. The sole, anatomical and removable footbed, nicely finished and comfortable lining that goes all the way up to the shaft, it's all there.
