If you’re wondering: ‘Maverick’ is the main character of Top Gun, played by Tom Cruise. Between jet fighter flights, he rode across airfields with his female instructor Charlie on the back but without helmets on a Ninja GPZ900 R. This was all fine in the eighties.
And yes, it was 100% certain a GPZ900R Ninja. The fastest production motorbike available at the time, that with its 115bhp had a top speed just shy of 250 kilometres an hour. Today, he may look like a badly coloured beam on wheels, back then it won the TT on Isle of Man in an instant. The ‘grandfather of the modern-day sport touring bikes’ was stacked with brand-new technology, was fun to ride and obviously a much bigger star than Tom Cruise.
Well, that being said.
With this Maverick, Segura presents a summer successor to the Tobias. Similar and equal, so once again a very comfortable motorbike glove with ambition. Comparable to the riding ambitions by Tom Cruise when he exchanged the Ninja GPZ900 R for a supercharged Kawasaki Ninja H2 with 310 bhp (!) in the new Top Gun movie, only more realistic.
The Maverick is vintage Segura, meaning: vintage. Possibly a wink to the 1980s, to classic times, retro motorbikes and pilots exchanging sticks for handlebars. The leather-finished Maverick leaves all options open and focuses mainly on delivering a healthy dosage of excellent protection.
Practically one colour, stylish details, moderate, actually everything the Ninja GPZ900 R in 1985 wasn’t, but at least as good. This short (just up to the wrist) motorcycle glove consists mainly of Spandex, with its elastic qualities. The result is a well-fitting and tight protection that actually always fits right. Amara (wear-resistant mesh material) takes care of the appreciated ventilation and the goatskin on the palm creates wear-resistant grip, steering feel and protection.
The knuckle protector is integrated, which limits the external protective material to a minimum. An elastic band at the ball of the thumb makes sure the Maverick fits neatly but a Velcro strip three centimetres down ensures an even finer adjustment.
