With the Taran Flash motorcycle jacket, Modeka markets a conspicuous, nearly luminescent, waterproof textile motorcycle jacket that will bring joy to many all-season riders and commuters. In a wide variety of circumstances and thanks to the adjustments options on the way, this 2-in-1 is a budget-friendly top-class model.
A top-class model that is available in almost every size imaginable.
We need to add an additional paragraph for the ‘Flash’ because there’s a regular Taran as well. The Taran Flash, however, is provided with a specific, reflective outer layer that is very inconspicuously ‘grey’ but as soon as night falls, that same grey excellently reflects the light, generating a visibility that effortlessly equals every other reflective material. It is a striking feature. Well, at night, it is.
The exterior of an all-rounder like the Taran Flash consists mainly of a wear-resistant fabric. In this case, Modeka went for a combination of 750D Tactel® Cordura, ripstop and 500D Polyamide. Each ingredient more light-weight than the next, so it should not surprise that the total package delivers an acceptable number of kilograms and grams. Attention: this is a 2-in-1 and it’s a motorcycle jacket, so ‘acceptable’ means something else here than ‘you can hardly feel you’re wearing the Taran’.
Nevertheless, an all-rounder like the Taran can be worn anywhere anytime. You adjust it along the way, along the circumstances, need or necessity. If we stick to the outer layer, what first jumps out are the wide ventilation openings on the chest. Thanks to the magnetic closure, you open them up completely during the ride, creating a perceptible flow around your body. Long ventilation zippers on the sleeves fit this purpose seamlessly and even the collar can be left open during the ride – without fluttering – thanks to the collar-hook, creating even more circulation.
One layer below that, we find the removable Humax-membrane. This waterproof and windproof membrane is an old friend of Modeka’s and carries out its duties wonderfully. Don’t let the absence of a thermal lining be an obstruction: there are separately-wearable thermal vests, fleeces and sweaters in abundance and even the all-season riders among us will have to admit that a thermal lining will stay in the closet far too often.
Modeka shapes all this with a clear eye for detail and a high level of finishing. The presence of two proper layers requires, together with the Taran Flash’s all-round ambitions, a number of individual adjustment options. Once again: the range of the sizing table is impressive but the stretch material on the sleeve ends, adjustable straps-with-buckle on upper and lowers arms and centring Velcro straps allow for even more refinement.
For the rugged impact protection, you can count on standard YF shoulder and elbow protection. With an EN 1621-1:2012 level 1 certification, these are awarded a class AA label. The Taran Flash is prepared to fit a SAS-TEC SC-1 back protector, should you want to.
There’s more than enough storage space. The evident slash pockets and (many) inner pockets are practical and properly closable and as a bonus, you get a convenient little storage compartment on the left lower arm to store a credit card or something small.
The connecting zip allows to combine with the Modeka Taran motorcycle trousers.
Below, you will find an overview per jacket size of the appropriate CE homologated SAS-TEC®back protector.
