The I90 from HJC is the successor of the successful Max II. An accessible but very decent motorcycle helmet, with in this case even a double homologation. You can consider the I90 as a full-face helmet or ride it flipped-up, like a jet helmet.
There are not that many double homologated helmets on the market, so it is an extra asset to add to the list. The I90 has a (lightweight) helmet shell in polycarbonate. Or better: three helmet shells, to include all sizes. On the scales, this translates into about 1700 grams. That seems more than it is, because the I90 is a well-thought-out and very complete motorcycle helmet.
Chin ventilation, top ventilation and a double opening at the back ensure a healthy and good air circulation. Chin and top ventilation can of course be opened or closed, even with gloves. The interior supports airflow and ensures you keep a fresh head in all conditions.
You can operate the built-in sun visor with the slider at the bottom left of the helmet. Thanks to the RapidFire™ Shield Replacement System, no tools are needed to replace the transparent visor with a tinted or mirrored one. Both visors offer a wide field of vision, and special attention has been paid to the sun visor. Pinlock® 70 is standard and the lens is included in the box. A treatment on the outside of the visor with Rain X anti-rain spray improves visibility during rain showers.
To open and close the 'flip-up system' you use the red button at the bottom of the chin guard. It's easy: the button is big enough to be operated with gloves. The double homologation requires of course that the I90 is properly locked in the flipped-up position.
Under the red button you find the chin wind curtain (attached with two velcro straps) which brings us to the interior of the HJC I90. These days they are cut to size, removable, perfectly cleanable, anti-bacterial and washable; it all sounds perfectly logical. Grooves in the right places make it extra comfortable for spectacle wearers.
The Microlock is of course adjustable in length and has a quick-release system. Nose deflector, various colors, a good neck rim ... The I90 is a very strong and well-priced motorbike helmet.
In some countries (e.g., France) it is mandatory to have reflective decals on your helmet. The I90 comes without these reflective stickers. Reflective sticker sets can be found here.
Maintenance tips:
- Are you reluctant to disassemble the interior of your helmet in order to wash it? You can also clean the interior without removing it with S100 Helmet Interior Cleaner.
- The outside and the visor of your helmet should be cleaned with S100 Helmet and visor cleaner.
Safety above all! Never ride with a scratched or dull visor. Especially at night, scratches cause blinding reflections of street lights and headlights of oncoming vehicles. This effect is even more pronounced in rainy weather. It is best to replace a worn visor as soon as possible. Planning a long trip? Then don't forget to take a replacement visor with you. Never ride in the dark with a tinted visor.
