With this Varus, Modeka created a strong, versatile and sharply-priced all-rounder. This 3-in-1 follows the tradition of the Panamerica (II) but mostly serves as a first introduction to everything so much as smelling like ‘adventure’. Something for the fans of that particular style and/or all-season riders who are on a budget.
Varus was the Roman general that lost 3 legions in Germania but that didn’t really strike us as a resemblance or reference when reviewing this motorcycle jacket. The three-quarters, 3-in-1 textile jacket consists of an exterior made of wear-resistant 600D polyester. In places that could be extra vulnerable in the event of a fall that even became a doubled layer, in order for you to be sure of proper initial protection. The Varus is just a little longer in the back – a cut that in this category of motorcycle jackets is rather the norm than the exception. A vertical zipper at the bottom eliminates a bulging front, while the supple, central YKK zip performs its task excellently.
What keeps you dry is a 100% water and windproof Reissa® membrane, without having to compromise in the field of breathability. The watertight membrane can be removed, obviously, which is also true for the thermal lining that protects you from the cold. The other way around is probably even better, because ventilation opening-wise, the Varus takes you on a true discovery tour. The two direct and lockable (press stud) chest openings can’t be missed but apart from that, there are at least six more direct ventilation zips. Modeka calls this system ‘AirVent’ and it functions brilliantly.
Thanks to this system, you can wear the Varus in Summer as well as Winter, and almost everything in-between. That’s impressive for a motorcycle jacket in this price range. There’s even a heap of individual adjustment options as well. Two adjustable straps on the sleeves, besides the Velcro strip at the sleeve end. The centring straps on the sides are always practical, just like the slidable push button on the collar.
The adventurous motorcycle jackets by Modeka can count on a lot of storage space as well, which is no different here. Two in the front, a small emergency pocket on the left forearm and at least one inner pocket in each of the three layers – you can definitely store some stuff in here. The wide storage pocket in the lower back is meant to store away the membrane so you don’t lose it on the way.
WINNER® is in charge of the required impact protection. Shoulders and elbows are standard equipped with CE-approved level 1 protectors. Evidently, there’s reflective material. Not that conspicuous during the day, perfectly safe in the evening and at night.
The Varus has a connecting zip. This opens up all kinds of options with regard to combinations.
