We all know that a trench is something we don’t want to fall into without being properly equipped. With the Trench 2 GTX for example, a very versatile and stylish motorcycle jacket for long distances, urban commuting and 365 days of motorcycle fun.
As the second of its generation, REV’IT! has given the Trench 2 GTX the best possible technical properties. There might be better options when your destination is the Sahara; which is just about its only limitation. Its appearance suits that philosophy, because the Trench 2 GTX is rather neutral looking, preferring trendy over pure adventure, which makes it just a tad more discreet. Because there’s more than adventure bikes with studded tyres out there. If you are leaning more towards ‘grand tourer’, then this is your thing – even though the name might suggest otherwise.
The Sahara remark above refers to the laminated GORE-TEX membrane attached to the exterior of the Trench 2 GTX. More specifically, ‘laminated’ means that no water can enter, with the limits being the actual exterior. So, no water-absorbing outer fabric, no heavy spongy jacket, no extra weight and a quick-drying overcoat once the rainfall is over. Although it does have breathing properties, it does hinder advanced ventilation which is why it is best to choose something else for that dessert ride.
Further, there are no real limitations to be found. The Trench 2 is still made of 2L Nylon 600D GORE-TEX fabric. Wear-resistant. Tear-resistant. Waterproof, breathing and without cooling you down to the bone (during those winter rides). On the other hand, there’s a removable thermal lining in case you feel a bit nippy. As you can see, the all-round usability of the Trench 2 focuses slightly on less opportune weather conditions. The result is a motorcycle jacket that is great for commuting and that is a comfortable companion for a large part of the northern hemisphere.
Not to mention that you’ll get far on warmer days as well. The VCS|Aquadefence is a ventilation system that has been patented by REV’IT!, consisting of ventilation openings with FidLock® magnetic closure. You can close this waterproof barrier easily with one hand during your ride. The ‘aquadefence’ consists of a little ‘gutter’ around the ventilation opening which prevents moisture from finding its way in. There are two exits in the back. Not too many zips and ventilation slots, but like we said: the Trench 2 GTX is largely breathable, which more than suffices.
A little heads-up: the strong magnets might interfere with pacemakers, so when in doubt, make sure to get the right information first.
The Trench 2 GTX understandably was given a touring cut, with a back that as expected has a wider finish. You can adjust the jacket on the sides with an additional pushbutton, or you can use the belts with buckles on the lower arms to customise the fit of the Trench 2. The other options are the sleeve ends (Velcro), collar (studs) and waist (drawstring). You probably won’t use this to travel the world but the large slash pockets can contain quite a lot. Except for the two – with magnetic closure – pockets on the outside, there’s also an inner pocket and two pockets in the removable thermal lining for storage.
The standard Trench 2 is equipped with SEEFLEX™ Level 2 CE-protection on shoulders and elbows. In the back, you can integrate an optional SEESOFT™ CE-level 2 back protector and for those who want to, you can also fit in a double SEESOFT™ CE-level 1 chest protector. The typical, laminated reflection on the back and the sleeves make sure you stay visible during the evening and at night.
You can combine this jacket with the right trousers thanks to the combination zip. Even though ‘right’ might be quite subjective, the Vertical GTX motorcycle trousers are the right choice in this case.
